southfield school announces new head of school

Sunny Huckaby

Welcome Back

Mrs. Sunny Huckaby!

The Board of Trustees of Southfield School is pleased to announce the unanimous selection of Mrs. Sunny Huckaby as its next Head of School beginning July 1, 2022. She is returning to Southfield after spending the past two years as the Lower School Director at Spartanburg Day School in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Mrs. Huckaby earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, from Louisiana State University in Shreveport, and a Master of Education Degree in Early Childhood Education and Louisiana Preschool Certification from Northwestern. While at Southfield from 2008-2019, Sunny served as a 2nd-grade teacher, Preschool Director, and Assistant Head of School for Preschool-2 through Grade 2. In selecting Sunny, the Board of Trustees has chosen a dedicated and proven administrative leader who understands Southfield’s unique culture and community. She is trustworthy and respected by her peers and by the parents she serves.

Mrs. Huckaby’s Southfield journey began as she realized that Southfield was not only a school where she wanted her two children to be educated but would also be an ideal place to teach. She quickly moved into administrative leadership roles at Southfield and exhibited a fair and compassionate style. After gaining valuable experience at Spartanburg Day School, she is thrilled to return to a community she loves.

It can’t be overstated how enthusiastic the Board of Trustees is that Sunny is our new leader, and we ask that the entire School and local community join with us in welcoming Mrs. Huckaby back to Shreveport as Head of Southfield School.

A Message from Mrs. Huckaby

“The first time I walked onto Southfield School’s campus in the spring of 2008, I knew that it was a special place. I was touring the campus because I was looking for a different experience for my own two children. I saw teachers enjoying their time in the classroom, smiling and engaging with students in meaningful activities. Walking away from the campus that day, I knew that I had found a new school for my children. The educational experience that I observed incorporated the best practices that I knew were optimal for student learning. Not long after enrolling my children at Southfield, I accepted a position as a teacher.  Not only did I want my children to attend this incredible school, but also I set my heart on the opportunity to teach students in the way I had observed that spring day: authentically, respectfully, joyfully and wholeheartedly. It was the beginning of our new journey, and soon I learned what it meant to be a part of the Southfield family.

Coming back to Southfield as the next Head of School is an honor, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to lead a community that I hold so close to my heart. My goal for every child that steps through the doors at Southfield is to have an exceptional education that sparks joy in each day. I anticipate leading the school in a way that cultivates curiosity, character, and kindness, as these values are essential elements of the Southfield experience. The school will flourish as we continue to develop a lifelong love of learning in each student, and alumni will shine beyond Southfield’s picturesque front doors.

Southfield has been a premier institution in the Shreveport Bossier area since 1934, and I’m convinced that the best is yet to come. With strong enrollment, unparalleled facilities, and outstanding educators, Southfield will soar even higher in the years ahead. Southfield’s legacy will extend into new arenas of excellence as we advance the mission in innovative and creative ways. I look forward to leading and serving a community that I love, Southfield School.”
