Per Governor Edwards, students will not be allowed to return to school buildings for the remainder of the school year, but education will continue. In adherence to this announcement, Southfield School’s campus will remain closed to parents and students for the remainder of the school year as well. Faculty and Staff will continue to educate and develop a lifelong love of learning with students through online learning.

Take a look at what Southfield’s faculty and students have been up to during this time of distance learning.

Preschool

Our Preschool friends have been very active during this time of distance learning. From walking rainbow science experiments to video French lessons, our youngest Eagles continue to soar!

Preschool teachers primarily utilize Seesaw and video instruction for class lessons and assignments. Below are videos of Mr. Jason and his chickens, and Mrs. Davis and her musical egg hunt. Both were very popular with students – and parents!

Lower School

Our students in kindergarten through 4th grade are hard at work continuing their lessons as they would on campus. From research presentations to persuasive speech writing to scientific studies on egg dying and puffy paint clouds, our Eagles continually impress us with their creativity and determination.

Lower School teachers utilize Seesaw and Zoom video lessons to communicate with students. Our Eagles especially love videoconferencing with their teachers and class!

Middle School

Our 5th-8th grade Eagles “meet” with teachers and classmates via videoconferencing. We continue to be wowed by our Eagles’ efforts during these unprecedented times (have you ever heard a Harry Potter/Hamilton original rap? Check out Eli’s drama submission!).

Middle School teachers use Google Classroom, video lessons, and live videoconferencing meetings with students.

Staff Shout-Outs

Southfield’s faculty and staff have been hard at work to continue our school’s mission to instill a Lifelong Love of Learning in each of our students. Their work has not gone unnoticed. Here are just a few of the many kudos we’ve received bragging on Eagle staff members!

“I want to first of all say how very impressed we have been with the way Southfield handled the COVID 19 situation from the get go. Justin did an amazing job getting ahead of things etc. We are so proud he is OUR head of school.

ALL of our teachers are just unbelievable. From Bria being her normal eager self wanting to help & love our babies in any way possible (not to mention the videos and attire only our Bria could pull off, HA!) to Mrs. Thelen making a video for our 5th graders explaining in detail each book on their 6th grade summer reading list. Something she certainly did not have to do.

Susan Murrell has been just fantastic! She has been super understanding, supportive and has the patience of Job. Her willingness to support Etta (I am sure all of the kids) has really pulled at our heart strings. She sends sweet compliments on a lot of the work Etta turns in. She emails me back right away. She has something supportive to say to ME in her email responses. I can’t thank her enough.

I have never been more proud to be a part of Southfield School!”

“Our family would like to shout-out Mrs. Melissa Wyss. She is a PS-3 teacher and she has really tried to make this online learning experience fun and exciting for our 3 year olds. We are truly grateful for her.”

– The Spellmans

“I just wanted to say that the PS-2 instructors are amazing!  Olivia looks forward to her daily video from her teachers that she misses so much!  She will watch them over and over again, whether it is Ms. Lacie reading or Ms. Madeline singing and dancing, their engagement with her has helped immensely.”

– Lucas, Tabatha, and Olivia Lobo, PS-2

“Mrs. Frizzell made it a point to record and share the journey of the kids’ caterpillars as they completed the stages of metamorphosis to become butterflies. She included a video to show how to make a a butterfly house for the preschoolers’ caterpillars encased in their chrysalises and provided updates to the preschoolers as the butterflies hatched.”

“The Eagles educators have been amazing throughout this whole experience. From the beginning, each and every one of our wonderful teachers have been supportive. They have always found a way to make it work! Not only have they made themselves available to their students, they have kept their learning experiences exciting, fun and memorable. The ways that they have included collaborative learning throughout this quarantine is amazing. Keep Shining Eagle Educators! WE LOVE YOU!!!”

“Ms. Batte, Ms. Cockerell, & the 6th grade team are doing an outstanding job to make the lessons enjoyable. Ms. Batte has created exceptional assignments that keep the 4th graders engaged and eager to learn.”

– Torri Palms-Moore

Our kids have loved Coach Calhoun’s videos she has done a great job in keeping them active at home. Also they love the drawings each week.”

– Genelle Chamberlain

“Mrs. Thelen has gone above and beyond this week for her 6th graders!!! Our home library is slim pickings right now with new books to read. Earlier this week on google classroom Mrs. Thelen asked if anyone needed a book from her class library. Maddie let her know that she was running low on books to read. Fast forward to today, Saturday and Mrs. Thelen made a sweet porch delivery for Maddie!!! It was a bag that included three chapter books for her to read! I love and so appreciate her going the extra mile to make sure her students are still reading during this time! Bonus … Maddie walked outside to grab the books just in time to see Mrs. Thelen pulling out of the driveway and being able to smile and wave at her!”

“Mr. Rowell has gone above and beyond once again. He has taken distance learning to the extreme. He arranged to have a replacement chrome book shipped 1200 miles so Jonas could continue to stay connected to Southfield. He has also repeatedly made himself available on weekends/nights and Spring break. A big “thank you” to Mr. Rowell for keeping our kids learning safe and Southfield strong.”

 – Ashley Prince

“I think that Dr. Shumate has done an outstanding job with the video lessons. He has maintained his lectures through video making the e-learning transition easier for them. I dont have a specific lesson just his overall effort is appreciated.”
