Letter from the Associate Headmaster Southfield offers a dynamic, progressive and balanced academic program in a student-centered learning environment. From preschool through eighth grade, the curriculum is both challenging and varied. Our youngest students explore their world and learn to get along with one another through age appropriate activities geared toward preparing them for the more rigorous academic curriculum found in our other divisions. In Lower and Middle School, the core academic subjects of language arts, mathematics, science, foreign language, history and social studies, are complimented by a full range of enriching classes in technology, physical education, music, drama and the visual arts. In many cases, teachers use an interdisciplinary and integrated approach to learning by combining classroom instruction, with memorable activities, class trips, and guest speakers. Through these and other techniques, our students learn that they have the ability to solve problems, to ask questions, to make discoveries, and to find answers for themselves. In so doing they build a strong foundation for developing self-confidence and a lifelong love of learning. Explore this area to learn more about each division's curriculum, unique activities, faculty and events that create the Southfield experience. Sincerely, Gordon Walker Associate Headmaster of Lower and Middle School Mon - Fri Preschool Director Mon, Wed, Fri
small school. big success. The average graduating 8th grader has attended Southfield for 8 years. Through those years students develop not only a strong mastery of the basics, but also high level problem solving and critical thinking skills. This success becomes measurable in our Middle School. With only 150 students on average making up our Middle School (grades 5-8), Southfield students have won numerous academic awards and honors. Character Education Character Education is an intrinsic part of the daily experience at Southfield School. From the earliest age, Southfield friends are taught about respect and personal responsibility. Preschoolers are shown how to "use their words" to solve conflicts and how to be aware of the feelings of others in the classroom. As a Southfield student ages, the concepts of honesty, integrity, generosity, and personal responsibility are woven into the fabric of daily activities and personal interactions. By the time the student reaches Middle School, each is expected to live by a code of honor, making a commitment to these principals. Faculty members encourage discussion of how these principles of character apply to our daily choices. In addition to the daily framework for character building, philanthropy and service to the community is encouraged. Individual classes in the Preschool and Lower School divisions choose a small community related project each year, and at the Middle School students choose a "signature" project for the year. Currently they are supporting the Providence House, a shelter for homeless families in our area. View Curriculum Listings:
