PS-Art

PS-Art

In our Preschool classrooms, art is woven into every area of the curriculum. The focus is on process over product encouraging creativity, experimentation, and joy in making.
Each day, children explore a wide range of materials like tempera, watercolor, glue, paper, and markers. They experiment with collage, drawing, printing, and building, fully immersed in hands-on experiences.
Through this daily engagement, children strengthen motor skills, build confidence, and develop a genuine appreciation for art as a form of expression and exploration.

PS-Early Literacy

PS-Early Literacy

Our Preschool classrooms are thoughtfully designed to spark a love of literature, expand vocabulary, and build a strong foundation for reading and writing.
Through daily play and exploration, children engage with books, songs, and rhymes, developing an understanding that words and pictures represent the world around them. They’re encouraged to use writing and art tools in age-appropriate ways, helping build fine motor skills and early expression. Our PS4 students use the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program
Each week, students enjoy story time with our Library and Media Specialist, further enriching their literacy experience. At Southfield, early literacy is woven into every day in meaningful, joyful, and developmentally appropriate ways.

PS-Math

PS-Math

In Preschool, math comes to life through hands-on exploration and play. Children engage with materials and activities that introduce key concepts like more and less, big and small, shapes, patterns, and colors.
They explore size, quantity, and classification by using real objects, reading counting books, and noticing math in their daily environment. As they sort, compare, and group by attributes like shape, size, and color, they build early number sense and problem-solving skills.
Our approach makes math concrete, engaging, and meaningful laying the groundwork for confident, curious learners.

PS-Science

PS-Science

Our Preschool science curriculum sparks curiosity by encouraging children to explore the world around them using their senses. Through hands-on activities and open-ended materials, they learn to observe, question, experiment, and solve simple problems.
Teachers select books and plan experiences that align with children’s natural interests whether it’s weather, animals, plants, or how things work making science both meaningful and fun.

PS-Social Studies

PS-Social Studies

In our Preschool classrooms, social studies begins with helping children develop a strong sense of self and a respect for others. We create a classroom community where every child feels valued, accepted, and connected.
Through purposeful play and carefully selected materials, children explore concepts like family, community roles, diversity, and cooperation. These early experiences lay the groundwork for empathy, cultural awareness, and social understanding.
Starting in Preschool-3 Discovery, students take part in Southfield’s Civilization Fair, an exciting, immersive event where they explore civilizations, history, geography, languages, music, and art bringing the world to life in age-appropriate and meaningful ways.

PS-Physical Education

In Preschool, physical education is built into every part of our day. Our safe, thoughtfully designed spaces encourage children to move freely and gain confidence in their bodies through self-initiated play.Whether climbing, building with blocks, sifting sand, pouring water, or creating art, children are constantly developing coordination, balance, and motor skills. Daily playground time further supports large motor growth and active play. Movement is natural, constant, and essential.

PS-Imaginative Play

PS-Imaginative Play

Our Preschool classrooms are rich with opportunities for imaginative play, supporting children’s natural curiosity and creativity. Materials like books, puppets, dress-up clothes, home living centers, block areas, and dramatic play props invite children to explore new ideas and roles through pretend play.
These experiences help build language and literacy skills, foster social development, and encourage meaningful connections with others all through the power of play.

Library

Library

The library is an essential part of our school community, supporting both academic growth and personal development. It provides a welcoming space where students can explore, collaborate, and access a wide range of resources that enrich their learning experience. By teaching essential library skills, we empower students to engage in independent inquiry, make thoughtful choices about the materials they read, and explore a variety of genres. The library fosters a love of reading while also nurturing critical thinking, digital literacy, and creative expression. As readers, writers, and responsible digital citizens, students use the library to deepen their understanding of the world and themselves.
