Lower School Academic Overview

The Lower School program is traditional in nature and builds upon the hands-on, student centered model established in the Preschool. The Open Court Language Arts curriculum and the University of Chicago Everyday Math program provide continuity in these critical subject areas. Classroom teachers provide additional instruction in Social Studies and Science while Specialists supplement the core program with offerings in music, art, drama, physical education, foreign language and technology. The Lower School program is characterized by numerous special events and traditions as well as grade level plays and performances. The event that best represents the cross-curricular approach that is a Southfield education is the month-long interdisciplinary study of ancient civilizations which culminates in a well-loved annual tradition, the Civilization Fair.
