October 9, 2009

Dear Parents of Middle School Students,

The fall and winter basketball season is underway with Southfield fielding several girls’ teams. Please CLICK HERE to view a game schedule for those interested in attending a game against our local rivals. The following girls are representing our school: in fifth grade: Elizabeth Bryan, Renee Lyles, Grace Poimboeuf, Sara Sutton, Sadie Sutton, Molly Bowman, Kaylee Hooper, Lily Huggs, Cameron Robinson and Lillie Thompson; in sixth grade: Henley Fletcher, Samantha Powers, Katelyn Smith, CeCe LaBorde, Olivia McClure, Lillian Perkins, Ainsley Terrill, Caroline Berlin, and Catherine Rios; in seventh grade: Lane Craig, Sabrina Mashburn, Allyson Ruben, Emily Biernacki, Gabrielle Gary, Mallory Johnson, Annie Kennedy, Kailey Roberson and Samantha Sutton; and in eighth grade: Jasmine Nunley, Alyssa Ruben and Chloe Ramsey. Seventh grade girls are playing up to help out the eighth grade team. Have a successful season, girls!

Sixth grade students have been studying Shakespeare in their drama classes with Mrs. Thoma. On Tuesday, October 13, 10:40am-12:22pm they will conclude their studies with a wedding banquet from the play, “Romeo and Juliet” in the Commons area.

Social Studies Fair information will soon be passed out to middle school students by Ms. Susan Murrell, Ms. Judy Barro and Mrs. Laurie Bridel, social studies teachers. Students are encouraged to master and enjoy their research, and the project will culminate with the Social Studies Fair on Friday, January 29, 2010, 8:00am-12noon. (Mark your calendars!)

Each October one of the most delightful community events takes place down the road at Betty Virginia Park, our own Pumpkin Shine on Line. Attending will perhaps bring back your own Halloween recollections as a child and create a few to savor in later years when your children are grown! See you on Wednesday, October 28, 5:30-8:30pm.

On Monday and Tuesday, November 2nd and 3rd, parents and middle school students are scheduled to attend parent/teacher conferences. After nine weeks of hard work it is time to discuss each child’s academic progress, strengths, weaknesses, conduct, and to set goals for the remainder of the semester. First quarter grades and report cards will be sent home on Friday, October 30. The School encourages parents to focus on their child’s successes, including those of which have been accomplished while participating in football, cheerleading, Eagle Singers, basketball, yearbook and other extracurricular activities.

The process to elect this year’s Middle School Student Council will begin once first quarter grades are released. Nomination forms will be provided to all candidates and election day will be super Tuesday, November 10th, period three.

Sincerely,

Gordon Walker
