November 6, 2009

Dear Middle School Families,

Thank you for joining us for teacher/parent/student conferences this past week. These are important meetings to review individual academic work, study habits, and conduct through the first nine weeks of the year. They also present an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments and set goals for improvement through the next quarter of the year. There remain several more weeks of school plus Thanksgiving and Winter break in this semester! Do your very best boys and girls! Click here to see a list of Middle School students who earned recognition on the Headmaster’s List and Honor Roll for the first nine weeks of the school year. Congratulations to all named to these lists for their academic achievements.

  • On Tuesday, November 10, middle school students will elect their Student Council members for 2009-10. Candidates must have a 2.5 GPA and an excellent conduct record for the first quarter in order to be on the ballot!
  • Friday the thirteenth is Dads’ Club Movies and Moonbeams night featuring the popular animated movie: “Robots”. Students and their dads are invited for supper in the cafeteria and a great movie outside (weather permitting) or in the gymnasium. Bring a blanket and participate!
  •  On Thursday, November 19, the Jets Footballers will have their annual dinner to celebrate and honor teams and individuals who’ve been part of their organization. Southfield congratulates eighth grade students Kyle Berney, Ryan Downey, Nicholas Fultz, Hunter Hoogland, Raymond Purvis, Everett Robertson and Tristan Hebert for their participation and contribution to the Jets team.
  • Between now and Friday, November 20, Southfield Middle School will see how much non-perishable food and clothing we can collect for a local charity. The school will donate everything we collect to The Providence House which serves those with fewer resources than ourselves. Donations, sent to the middle school office, begin upon receipt of this letter and end at noon November 21. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

This month is always one of the busiest of our school calendar. Our annual Book Fair “Reading Around the World” is November 18 through 20. This event-filled week wraps up with our Grandparents’ and Friends’ Luncheon on Friday, November 20. We hope to see everyone at these uniquely Southfield events. Our senior class will continue a Southfield tradition of assisting parents and grandparents at this year’s luncheon. Their role will be to meet and greet visitors at the shuttle buses, help locate children for visitors, and assist with clean-up in the gym and Commons. The School appreciates their help at this event. We also want to thank our middle school student volunteers, especially the Cheerleaders and fifth graders, for their outstanding effort assisting at Pumpkin Shine on Line last week. Great job, done well!

Have a safe and restful Thanksgiving break,

Gordon Walker
