Dear Middle School Families,

• Beginning in late February, Southfield will be working with our Community Service partner, Volunteers of America, to host a six week Prime Time Reading Program for children from The Lighthouse.  Lighthouse children will be attending with their mentors.  The program will give the children and their mentors a special educational project which teaches the importance and joy of reading as well as use of the public libraries. Each night of the program, one group will be responsible for preparing for the event and providing the food:

  • Tuesday, March 3                   Southfield Alumni Association Night
  • Tuesday, March 9                    8^th Grade
  • Tuesday, March  23                7^th Grade
  • Tuesday, March 30                 6^th Grade
  • Tuesday, April 6                     5^th Grade
  • Please be sure to encourage your child to participate in this worthy program and partnership.
• Congratulations to Grace Long (7^th) for representing Southfield so well in the recent regional Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee at LSUS. We are very, very proud of her performance.
• Boy’s basketball playoffs begin this week, if you’re interested in supporting our 5^th, 6^th, 7^th and 8^th grade teams and Coach Kennedy please join us at any of the times and locations detailed on the school website www.southfield-school.org.
• Early March will see the culmination of much hard work for our middle school thespians with four performances of this year’s musical, Honk Jr. Performance nights are Thursday-Saturday, March 4-6 at 7:30pm and Sunday, March 7 at 3:00pm and we hope to reward our actors and actresses with capacity audiences. Tickets are available online at www.southfield-school.org/musical or each school day, 8:00-9:00am in the MSD Theater foyer. See you there.
• Tuesday, March 23^rd is the first day of LEAP testing for the eighth grade class. The remaining two days of tests will be Monday and Tuesday, April 12 and 13. Note: These dates and days are changes from the 2009-10 Southfield School calendar. Tests will be in the commons, 7:45am-1:00pm.
• There will be a Cheerleader sponsored dance for private school students in grades 6-8 in the gymnasium on Friday, March 26, 7:00-9:00pm. If you are able to chaperone this event please contact the middle school office, 861-6867 or jcampbell@southfield-school.org. Thank you.
• On Wednesday, March 31 and Thursday, April 1, we will be scheduling our annual spring parent/teacher/student conferences. Please plan to attend these very important meetings with your son and/or daughter.
