Dear Middle
School Families,
- This past month brought to a conclusion several activities
that were initiated well before the winter vacation. On January 7th,
Grace Long (7th) won
the school level Scripps-Howard Spelling Bee final and will represent Southfield at the regional final scheduled for February 20th,
at LSUS. On January 15th, Yale
Rosen (8th) won the school level National Geographic
Geography Bee and goes on to see if he can make the Louisiana State
rankings for 2010.
- And just this past Friday, the following students
won recognition for their Social Studies Fair projects begun last October:
In Division I for 5th and 6th grade children; CeCe LaBorde, Macy Scott and Alicia
Smith were winners with Kent Felty, Alex Robertson, and George Thomas
Mainous as alternates. In Division II, for 7th and 8th
Grade students; Cole Evensky,
Malcolm Huff, Sabrina Mashburn, Jasmine Nunley, Bradley Potts, and John
Wiener were winners with Scott Quigley, Chloe Ramsey, and Sawyer Ballew as
alternates. In the 8th grade Group Project Division winners
were Nicholas Fultz, Hunter
Hoogland, Everett Robertson, Hunter Brandhurst and Daniel Ferris.
- On Saturday, February 6th, Southfield
MathCounts team goes into regional competition at Louisiana Tech Technology Center. Our two teams will be Kyle
Berney (8th), Clark McCrery (8th), David Newtown (8th),
and Yale Rosen (8th); and Carter Brown (7th), Ryan
Downey (8th), Emily Nelson (8th), and Bradley Potts
(7th). Thanks to sponsor Mrs. Holly Berry, and good luck to our teams in the competition.
- On Wednesday, February 10th, 10:15-11:15am, middle school students will be treated to
medieval presentations “The Renaissance
Monologues” performed by students (some Southfield alums) from English classes at Caddo Magnet High School.
- The middle school Mardi Gras Feast will be on
Tuesday, February 16th, 12:30-1:30pm in the cafeteria. Students wanting all the
extras (alligator, meat pies, jambalaya, crawfish etouffe, King Cake etc.)
should indicate that on their February lunch order form. Thanks ahead of
time to Mrs. Gail Brown and her
parent helpers! All students are invited to bring beads, decorations
etc. to adorn their lockers for a fun competition sponsored by the MS
Student Council (prizes for each grade level winners!) and judged by Mrs. Mary
Lutz, Art teacher. We will decorate on Friday, February 12 at break and lunch
recess. Laissez les bon temps rouler!
- On Tuesday, February 23rd, Southfield begins its service project, Prime Time, sponsored and organized by Laurie
Bridel, Susan Murrell, and Vicki
Cockerell.
Prime Time is a six week service project for the Southfield community to assist at-risk families from The
Lighthouse with developing family literacy and reading projects.
- Although your children will have an opportunity
to see a rehearsal of the spring Middle
School musical Honk Jr. during a school day, families are invited to
see the production at one of four performances, March 4th-6th
at 7:00pm and Sunday, March 7th at 3:00pm. Tickets are $10.00
each, assigned on a first come, first-served basis. The School would love
the cast of seventh and eighth graders to perform to four full houses
after their many hours of afternoon rehearsals. It will be a fantastic,
musical extravaganza!
Sincerely,
Gordon W. Walker
Associate Headmaster
