On March 6th, Southfield students competed against students from schools in Caddo, Bossier, Webster, DeSoto and Red River Parishes at the Region I Science Fair. All of Southfield’s participating students represented the school admirably with a significant number of them placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in individual categories and/or receiving special awards as indicated below.

Region I Science Fair Results

Division A – 5th Grade

Jacob Kesten (Does the Dishwasher Sterilize Sponges?) – 1st Place Microbiology
Jonathan Li (Salt as an Electrolyte; A Study on Efficiency of Electrolysis in Fuel Cells) – 3rd Place Engineering; Materials and Bioengineering

Division B – 6th, 7th and 8th Grades

1st Place School Sweepstakes Award – Southfield School

The School Sweepstakes Award is presented to the school that amasses the greatest number of points for ALL of the projects it enters in the Regional Science Fair. This award represents the collective success of Southfield’s student scientists who participated at the Regional Fair and is shared by them all.

Individual Sweepstakes Awards
1st Place - Jasmine Nunley (Green Roofs Are the Future); $300.00 Savings Bond
2nd Place – John Wiener (Solar Furnace); $200.00 Savings Bond

The Individual Sweepstakes Awards are presented to the individual projects that receive the greatest number of judges’ points when compared to ALL projects entered regardless of category; i.e. Jasmine and John had the two projects deemed “best overall” by the judges.

Sam Williams (Work From Wind) – 1st Place Engineering; Energy and Transportation
Emily Littrell (Disappearing Ink) – 2nd Place Environmental Management
Garrett Littrell and Taylor Wilmore (Battery Bench Press) – 3rd Place Team Projects

Each Junior Division participant placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in his/her category is invited to compete at the Louisiana State Science Fair at LSU-Baton Rouge. The state competition will be held April 20th.
