Preschool Performing Arts and Special Programs

In Preschool, students participate in the performing arts in a variety of ways. Classroom dramatic play centers offer children the opportunity to express themselves through make-believe roles using available props (such as clothing, shoes, and hats). This can be accomplished individually or in small groups. Preschool students are also involved in a number of performances throughout the year, such as the Halloween Program and Holiday Program. In addition, kindergarten performs a Class Play/Program, and a Flag Ceremony. Check the school calendar for the specific dates of each event.

Halloween Program

Singing, dancing and musical performances by costumed preschool through second grade students usher in All Hallow's Eve.

Winter Holiday Program

This is a whole school presentation of singing, dancing and music to celebrate the upcoming holidays.

Civilization Fair

A theatrical presentation showcasing lessons learned during an integrated study of ancient civilizations. This presentation features Preschool and Lower School students sharing songs, poetry, and rhythmic movement representative of the civilization they have studied.

Mardi Gras Parade

Kindergarten students have their first experience with a grade level production by presenting a Mardi Gras themed performance featuring song, poems and dances and a costumed parade near Fat Tuesday each year.

Maypole

This highly anticipated event is one of longest standing traditions at Southfield School. Preschool Discovery students welcome the coming of Spring with an outdoor celebration of songs, poetry and a dance around the maypole.

Final Flag Ceremony

Students sing a song from their grade level drama production and the senior class rings out the year.

Preschool Parties

Preschool students celebrate special holidays and school events with simple parties throughout the year. Dates for most events can be found on the school calendar or will be announced well in advance by your child's teacher.

  • Halloween
  • December Holiday
  • Valentines Day
  • Spring Egg Hunt
  • Maypole (Discovery Classes)
  • End of Year

Room mothers should meet with the class and grade level homeroom teachers to plan parties. Parties should be simple and similar to other parties in that grade level. Coordination and cooperation are applauded and encouraged; 'one-upmanship' and excessive elaboration is discouraged. Try to involve as many parents as possible throughout the year. The school strongly discourages room mothers from collecting money from other parents. Parents should be encouraged to contribute time, decorations or refreshments. All parties must be on campus.
