Preschool Technology Program

Use of technology in our preschool classrooms begins with the knowledge that, in practice, computers supplement and do not replace highly valued early childhood activities and materials, such as art, blocks, sand, water, books, exploration with writing materials, and dramatic play. We do, however use computers and technology in developmentally appropriate ways beneficial to our youngest children, understanding that technology can enhance children’s cognitive and social activities.

In our Preschool-3 Discovery classrooms, appropriate technology is integrated into the regular learning environment. Tape recorders for child use may be found in listening centers. Magnifying glasses, microscopes, telescopes, and computers may be found in science centers. Keyboards may be found in home living centers. Technological opportunities in the classroom are designed for use by two or three children to maximize social development and extend learning.

Preschool-4 Readiness classrooms may include computer stations that utilize software which engages children in creative play, mastery learning, problem solving, and conversation. In some cases, they may use specific Everyday Math games which enforce and extend Readiness math skills. Again, each station is designed for children to use together.

Kindergarten Technology Program

At the kindergarten and lower school levels, students are exposed to programs that reinforce reading, math, graphics, and emerging writing skills. Students learn to use special software that allows them to create stories and illustrations. They also use a program that reinforces math concepts taught in the classroom. Beginning in first and second grade, students begin creating multimedia presentations using software that combines text with graphics. By second grade, they learn to use the Internet for research, using kid-friendly search engines. They also begin learning how to enter data into a simple spreadsheet program and create graphs using this data. In third and fourth grade they are given formal keyboarding instruction. They also progress to more sophisticated programs for word processing, multi-media presentations, and spreadsheets. Students are given opportunities to do research using the Internet and are taught effective and safe search techniques.

Students use a fully-equipped, networked PC technology labs outfitted with a SMART Board, scanner, laser, and color printers. Kindergarten and First Grade classrooms have two PCs and a printer for student use. Teachers have a SMART Board in their classroom for instructional purposes.
