Classes visit the library once a week for 20-30 minutes for story time. The librarian makes an effort to coordinate library stories and themes (both book and non-Book formats) with the preschool units of study. Story time involves sharing at least one picture book, flannel board story, cassette- or videotape on either a particular work of literature, the current classroom topic of study, a noted author, a fairy tale, a fable, or a seasonal theme. As time allows, additional books are shared; hands-on activities accompany the lessons when appropriate. These activities can include making books, constructing stick or paper bag puppets, playing games, and producing artwork to illustrate an aspect of the weekly story.

To instill a love of reading, to teach appropriate care of books, and to train students in the proper procedures for checking books in and out of the library, each student selects one book from a pre-selected story box of books to take back to the classroom to read and share. The following library session the student returns the book and selects another.
