Lower School Performing Arts and Special Programs

Beginning in Lower School, students have the opportunity to participate in a grade level musical production, as well as events unique to the grade level curriculum. For example, first grade students write, illustrate and present books to their friends and family at the annual Authors' Tea each spring. All Lower School students continue to participate in school wide assemblies for the monthly Flag Ceremonies, holiday programs, Civilization Fair, and Fine Arts Festival. Dates of these events are announced well in advance by your child's teacher and most can be found on the school calendar.

Monthly Flag Ceremonies

The entire student body gathers in the Southfield gym on the first Monday of the month to sing the school song, celebrate birthdays, and to hear special announcements including recognition for outstanding achievement in academics and extracurricular activities. Each month a different grade hosts the ceremony, usually sharing a song from their grade level musical production. Additionally, the Southfield Cheerleaders perform and occasionally, the Eagle Singers or a strings group will perform a short concert.

Halloween Program

Singing, dancing and musical performances by costumed preschool through second grade students usher in All Hallow's Eve.

Winter Holiday Program

This is a whole school presentation of singing, dancing and music to celebrate the upcoming holidays.

Civilization Fair

A theatrical presentation showcasing lessons learned during an integrated study of ancient civilizations. This presentation features Preschool and Lower School students sharing songs, poetry, and rhythmic movement representative of the civilization they have studied.

Fine Arts Festival

Fine arts displays, creative rhythms, classical strings and piano solos are showcased. Again fifth grade students participate but beginning in sixth grade participation depends on whether or not the student is an Eagle Singer or plays a musical instrument.

Final Flag Ceremony

Students sing a song from their grade level drama production and the senior class rings out the year.

Lower School Parties and Social Events

In Lower School, students celebrate special holidays and school events with simple parties. Dates for these events can be found on the school calendar or will be announced well in advance by your child's teacher.

  • Halloween
  • December Holiday
  • Valentines Day
  • End of Year

There are several special events where room parents' assistance is very much needed. Room mothers should meet with the class and grade level homeroom teachers to plan parties. Parties should be simple and similar to other parties in that grade level. Coordination and cooperation are applauded and encouraged; 'one-upmanship' and excessive elaboration is discouraged. Try to involve as many parents as possible throughout the year. The school strongly discourages room mothers from collecting money from other parents. Parents should be encouraged to contribute time, decorations or refreshments. All parties must be on campus.
