Lower School Social Studies Program

The program for grades 1 through 4 is a rich and unique experience at Southfield.  Each grade studies specific time periords in history.  Using much more than textbooks and learning sheets, this experience is comprehensive and integrated in its nature.  Students learn about the culture, food, and music of the time and prepare hands on projects to illustrate and enhance their learning.  There is writing, drawing, critical thinking, charting and graphing of events and details of the time.

In addition to the regular curricululm, these grades participate in the Southfield tradition of Civilization Fair which takes place in the early spring.  One of the ancient cultures which the grade has studied will be their part in the fair.  They spend an entire grading period actively learning about the culture and then they do a multi-faceted performance for parents and friends including, music, drama, and dance.  The classrooms become a museum of their efforts.  This is a memorable experience for parents and students alike.
