Lower School Mathematics Program
First Grade through Fourth Grade

Everyday Mathematics, The University of Chicago School Mathematics Project, is used to teach first through fourth grade math. The program is organized into six content strands within which all learning goals are categorized: Operations and computation; numeration; patterns, functions and algebra; data and chance; measurement and reference frames; and geometry. The curriculum features real-life problem solving, reinforcement and extension of basic skills, an emphasis on communication, the integration of mathematics into other subject areas, and appropriate use of technology. Mathematical skills and concepts are revisited, developed, and extended in a variety of ways, creating a learning “spiral” over time.

Through explorations, desktop games, online computer games, and the use of manipulatives, students are actively involved in a hands-on approach to learning mathematics. Numerous methods for basic skills practice and review are provided, including written and choral fact drills, mental math routines, and daily sets of review problems called math boxes. Instructional time is balanced and each lesson includes whole group as well as small group, partner, or individual activities. Program routines are introduced in first grade and continue at each subsequent grade level, providing consistency throughout the curriculum.

Home / School Connection

Daily Home Links establish a partnership between school and home. These assignments provide opportunities for family members to participate in the students’ mathematical learning while also reinforcing basic math skills.
