Associate Headmaster of Lower and Middle School Mon - Fri Preschool Director Mon, Wed, Fri Lower School Foreign Language Programs French First Grade The curriculum used is the “Accelerated Integrative Method of Language Learning” found in the Histoires en Action curriculum. This method is also known as the “Gesture Approach.” The basic classroom vocabulary and a dramatic play are taught through gestures. The students will perform the play, usually with an accompanying song and dance. Toward the end of the year, they will begin reading the play aloud as a class and doing written activities such as filling in the blank to begin their exposure to the written language. The vocabulary introduced in preschool-four and kindergarten is reviewed periodically in first grade. After first grade, rote memorization through songs, etc. is not generally employed, but the vocabulary from those early years is used in the classroom as part of weekly interaction with students in French.
