Miss Susie and Miss Patti Discovery Class Newsletter January 30 – February 3 Theme: Africa Dear Parents, Today we embark on our journey through Ancient Africa. This is the start of the Civilization Fair experience. Civilization Fair is a wonderful Southfield tradition whereby each grade immerses itself in an ancient civilization. In Preschool 3 Discovery we study Africa. This will go on for several weeks culminating in our Civilization Fair on March 2nd. We will be exploring the geography, culture, food, languages, natural resources, and flora and fauna of Africa. It is a very exciting time. Literacy and Language: This week we will read We All Went on Safari: A Counting Journey Through Tanzania, The Water Hole, Over in the Grassland, Giraffes Can’t Dance, and Tigress. Art Activities: We will make a map of Africa. We will also put spots on giraffes and stripes on zebras. We will be doing a lot of stamping activities with African symbols. Discovery and Sensory: We will begin Rooting a sweet potato and we will plant our own grassland. We have talked a little about the Serengeti. We learned that Serengeti means “endless plain”. Math: Today we started learning to count to 5 in Swahili. Moja, Mbili, Tatu, Nne, Tano Cooking: On Thursday we will cooking the northern African dish couscous. Parents Corner Flag Ceremony February 6th at 8:15. We will have a substitute on Thursday and Friday of this week as several of us will be attending the ISAS conference in Houston. Luckily, we have Miss Patti to hold down the fort so everything will proceed as planned.
